Turning 25 and I cannot be happier with my place in life, love, friends, work, etc. I expected myself to be at a way different place in life at this age 10 years ago but it's a really exciting time to be me right now. Met Zandra Rhodes last week at Neiman Marcus during her Fall 2011 trunk show. She's designed the celebrated white outfits that Queen wore on stage as well as the deliciously camp ensembles in the Bohemian Rhapsody music video. Remember that winged catsuit that Freddie wore? Now that my laser sessions are finally showing permanent results, my insanely awesome band t-shirts are getting a much needed revival. I wanted to stay away from looking overtly tomboyish, so I the sleeveless cuts were more racerbacked than muscle tee. I used my Black Sabbath shirt as a template for the rest of the shirts above. I'm utterly thrilled that I scissored away these sleeves, they were harshing my mellow.

Before seeing PRINCE last night I made a screeeeeching stop at the nail salon to switch up to a purple themed mani. One of my faves: OPI's 'Linkin Park After Dark'. We attempted to slick on a purple glitter topcoat to the manicure, but the whole mani developed a ridged effect. I was trying to be extra festive cause I love me some PRINCE. So my nail lady wiped the WHOLE thing off with acetone and dried the shit out of my cuticles. Thus the slightly ravaged look around them. Not bad, eh? The show was INSANE.

It's thin enough to not weigh you down, but strong enough to keep all your jelly in it's place. OBVIOUSLY pair it with your Loubs and a white tee and THATS IT. If you really wanna overdo it in the right way, slap on red lipstick. If you want to be boring & safe like Kimmy K, get the pair in cobalt blue. It's been 2 weeks since my birthday and the holidays are coming up so I've got the topic of 'gift reciprocity' on my mind. Kinda like EYE FOR AN EYE, but gifting shouldn't be difficult. Let me me start off by saying I'm thankful for all my friends and all their love, but I take gifting seriously. It's a symbol of how important that person is to you and making them feel good on their bday. If I really like you, or you are practically a relative, chances are that you're getting jewelry (precious or semi-precious). If we're homies but see each other sparingly, you're getting high end personal use products (lotion, wine etc). I take this shit seriously and I carefully consider every gift I give before giving it. I expect the same from friends giving me gifts. If I buy you diamonds for two of your bdays in a row, best believe I expect that on MY birthday. It's not even a question of how much can you afford...especially when the 'friend' spends frivolously on themselves. Is it bad that I'm SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING a friendship after receiving the HORRENDOUS gift I was given? YES...I am. And TRUST, you're (you know who u are) not getting anything special next year. This rant does not include gifting your boyfriend or girlfriend, that's another level between you and your significant other.

I've been so bad. Please forgive me. I was in a dizzyingly blissful relationship during my absence. It was a warm pool of loveliness where I rarely wore heels and spent my all downtime with him. I neglected many pairs of shoes, a whole lot of relationships, and a social life...but that's what happens. I miss him. I bet my shoes missed me. Ironically, when I met my guy, our first conversation snowballed when he pointed out my Louboutin heels.

I may or may not get back into the blogging, but who knows? New York Fashion Week is coming up next week and I'm about to get my sartorial snatch wet with Spring 2011 runway looks. Was that lewd? I'm not going to apologize. I'm mourning and I'm allowed to be vulgar.

I ended up wearing the luscious leopard dress from Brian Lichtenberg to my birthday party. I paired the dress with black patent Alti pumps from Christian Louboutin (160 mm heel!). It worked out well and complemented my body nicely if I may say so myself. No shoulder pad shifting of any sort, even though it was premeditated. Isn't the color delicious?

Yeah yeah yeah...I am like 3 seasons late, and I first hated this look when it came out, but I am craving some colored cartoony- leopard print from Lanvin right now. I have been traipsing Ebay and online stores for some remnants of this line. It's a great pairing for both winter and spring. Ideally, I would like to own a skirt or shawl in this pattern. I must admit that Miroslava Duma's styling with her Lanvin skirt and coat really made me realize it would be a great look. I figured I should hit up the fabric stores and recreate my own rendition.

Came across a handful of Brian Lichtenberg dresses at Diavolina today. Brian's extremely talented and I was so excited to see his stuff out there in stores. I think I found option 2 for a birthday dress.

There are so many reasons I love this dress. It's got a leopard pattern, slightly see through, very body con, and made with a sultry cranberry velvet fabric. The shoulder pad is pretty hot too. The only drawback? I wish the shoulder padding was a little toned down-I have a small frame, so the shoulder pad has the tendency to float back and forth as I move in the dress.

So I'm debating whether I should shell out $300 on this Myne dress for my birthday. I prefer to wear a red dress but this s&m thing going on in the back of the dress is starting to grow on me. It makes my boobs look really good and this silhouette is pretty flattering on me. The fabric is not the best quality, although it looks great in the photo. Not entirely sold on the dress-because the pencil skirt thing underneath feels funky on my body. Keeping my options open, but I may end up getting it if I'm super desperate. Yeah I took photos in a fitting room...yeah I totally just became THAT person, but I just HAD to. Anyway, during my NYC trip I came across Fall's holy grail of Balmain jackets while meandering the Intermix in Soho. Although I don't believe in spending $13,000 on a jacket, trying on Balmain's fall masterpieces made me realize why they're so special. The engineer-like tailoring, buttery leathers and dead-on edge make it worth it if you can fork it (just made that up). So I hustled into the nearest fitting room and proceeded to try on these delicious duds.

MAC Black Mattene Lipstick

So I finally got my hands on MAC's new Mattene black lipstick in Midnight Media. It is WAY better than their new Cremesheen black lipstick in Black Knight. What makes it so extraordinary from all other black lipsticks (Wet n' Wild, Shu Uemera, etc) is it's cream-like application and matte sheen. The more matte the lipstick, the less transparent. The limited 'mattene' edition comes in a slim, skinny cylinder cartridge-unlike MAC's usual lipstick packaging. When I tried the lipstick on my hand, it had some faint eggplant tones, but its untraceable as you wear it. I lined my lips with Shu Uemera's cream pot eye makeup to tidy up the edges of my lips. If you can't go completely black, MAC's also got the same Mattene edition in Night Violet - a deep rich violet. Can't wait to wear it out!

Miroslava Duma is very much a style icon to me- she's a very quiet character in the fashion community, but allows her outfits to do all the talking. I love that she wears Alaia so beautifully and mixes her pieces up . If you are unfamiliar with Duma, here's a great description of her from Altamira: "Miroslava Duma is a well known editor from Moscow whose work started at Harper's Bazaar Russia and is now a contributor to L'Officiel Russia, Glamour Russia, the style section at Russian OK Magazine, and Tatler Magazine Russia. IT'S A SIGN. A month ago I had a very vivid dream that I bought a bright red 30cm Hermes Birkin with Palladium hardware. A couple days after the dream, I saw the same bright red 30cm Birkin on the arm of Ludarcris' arm candy chick at the Clipse concert. I'm not really a Birkin girl, because I cannot justify spending over $3,000 on a receptable for your cell and wallet, nor do I have over $3,000 to toss around. But there is something very delicious and daring about a red Birkin (along with a red jumbo Chanel flap bag), so I find them irresistable. Jak & Jil Blog posted a picture of this trompe l'oeil bag (translates as 'eye trick' for you non-francophones). Assuming that this bag is far less expensive (I do not know the designer) and lighthearted, it is a sweet substitute. :)

GONE TOO SOON. He is the reason I fell in love with music. The first time I watched MTV, Michael Jackson's 'Making of Thriller' was on. I watched wondering, "who IS this?" I was a little kid, but everything from his voice, video theatrics, dancing, music, and all around image allured me-the dude was my first crush! My first music purchase was Michael's Dangerous album. I played it everyday. Before yesterday's shitty news, I have been driving by Michael's house on the way back and forth from work. And YES, fans really did live out of their cars outside of his house. Cars lined the streets and tour busses were always hanging around, but I had no idea MJ was living there. I cannot stop getting emotional throughout the day. He's part of the reason I do what I do today. Here's one of the last pictures of Mike I remember googling of him in a Balmain blouse. I plan on making a Michael collage with all his amazing outfits. He is irreplaceable.

So many killer details on this baby. I like that they used pebbled leather, and made the platform a little more modern. I obviously ADORE spikes, I need them in my life-so these shoes are virtually a "DUH, own me!" I've always been a little iffy about Pour La Victoire, but when I walked into the UO at Space 1520, I was impressed. I need some serious spiked stompers, and these satisfy (but I do wish the heel was a little higher, to make a sexier arch).

YOU KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS SO BIZARRE IT JUST WORKS??! These shoes are delicious, but why haven't I seen them in stores? Given these could be totally just be a custom pair. I know these are for sure 160 mm, and definitely like the Alti pump model. They're so bordello meets candyshop meets Junko Mizuno. FashionSquad had these under "shoe porn." So fitting.

Zara Kills It

Zara has been on fire these past 2 months. Yes, I know they like to rip from the runways (ex: Balmain, Margiela, Ann D, etc etc). But aside from all that, they have moderately priced silk, killer blazers, and serious basics. In the past 3 weeks, I went APESHIT. So many things reminded me of pricier items that I could only dream of.

So naturally, I stocked up to where my wallet permitted. I was literally in the Century City store every other day. And in conclusion, I ended up with 3 blazers (black tux with long lapels, white mini sequins a la Chanel, and grey jersey a la Margiela meets YSL), gold sequin gladiator flats, multicolor high waist pouf skirt (a la Dries van Noten), white leopard bikini with splashes of color (a la Sprouse for LV), white modern shift dress, a black wool/silk blend tunic top with pockets AND a black suede mini slouchy briefcase bag (dripping with baby studs all over the front)! I can't wait to take pictures of some of this stuff for outfit posts. Whew! I swore I wouldn't shop for a while, but when I saw these gorgeous Ann D meets Givenchy boots, I promised myself I would have them.

These ladies were my winners from the 2009 Costume Institute Gala. I chose the two dazzling Balmain minis of the night, a gothic Phi mini, Jil Sander's punk polish fringe, an A. Wang knit mini situation, and last but not least: Ashley Olsen in The Row...whew. Sorry MK. PS. those hot pink/black pierre hardy scuba heels are so hard to walk in! I tried them on at Barney's last weekend.

Mary-Kate One-Ups Us (again)

Every time I find a new shot of Mary-Kate Olsen, it usually begins with a scroll, followed by a pause and closes with a "dammit," under my breath. Even when she is rocking dumpster-chic (left) she blows my mind. She's walking around with her gifted Alex Wang "Coco" duffle bag, and I'm on a waiting list. I swear if Mary-Kate was a rapper, one of her lines would be "BITCH, my bags are gifted-you're just on the waiting list" ...the sad part is that I would buy that album.

The wonderful Miss Brittany Black took this shot last week when we ventured out to socialize in Hollywood. I HAD THE PERFECT OUTFIT IN MIND:

-I just got this perfect white Zara blazer, and it is dripping with little white sequins.

-Black knit mini tank dress from Zara

-My white/gray snakeskin Ariella Talon booties from Christian Louboutin

-Red lipstick

But alas, I pussed out, scared that the blazer would be ravaged, snagged and smelling of cigarette smoke when it would come back home. I love it so much I can't bear to ruin it! I know its pathetic. So instead I stomped out of the house with my prized Black Sabbath 1981 tour shirt, American Apparel leggings, Stella McCartney wedge boots and the trimmings (lipstick, Hermes CDC bracelet and Chanel 2.55 purse). It was a winning look but I spent the whole night thinking of my rhapsodic sequin blazer.

Sometimes if you're on time (and lucky) you find some really mindblowing pieces at h&m. The fabric of this dress is like the well known tessuto fabric from Prada. It's light, durable, structured and displays an urban polish that I love so much. It hugs my the tiniest part of my waist and poufs out for this really exaggerated volume-which is also reminiscent of those skirts from Miu Miu's past spring collections. PS- Have you seen Lady Gaga's stage costumes? You will know what I'm talking about. It's my pride and joy. I'm still ruminating over the ways I could wear this dress with other things. Thoughts?

I garnished the look with black Lanvin robot boots, custom made palm gloves by LaCrasia, Marc Jacobs spike ring, Vivienne Westwood diamante armor ring and a Chanel caviar mini purse.

Status bags are just indicators of status anxiety had by a lot of the middle class in America and abroad. The gap between the wealthy and the poor is growing, and socio-economic conditions are becoming harder and harder for the middle class to keep its place, well, in the middle. So subconsciously the middle class is striving to say "Look! Look! I'm not poor! I'm ok!" by imitating the wealthy, which is where the status bag came from. Its aspiration, whether by maxing out your credit card to buy one or by getting a knock-off so you can have the look and suggest that you're upwardly mobile.

Same thing happened in the 80s when status was huge, Wall Street profits were huge (like now) and it was all about big money, big designers, big hair, big talking and big deals. "I got mine now you get yours" was the ethos and the fashion matched.

Can't wait for the early 90s revival with the backlash against all things obviously designer/status driven/corporate. Although hopefully this revival won't be just about the look, and it will signal changing attitudes about what is and isn't priority

Seriously, I still can't get over the fact that babystrange.blogspot.com is taken. However, I did buy the domain babystrange.com, and hope to move everything on there. I spent like $200 buying up domains and potential website building packages, but no to avail and little time- I have yet to really figure out the core of this websites potential by my hands. I am still convinced I should hire a web savvy friend to come to my rescue.

How I long for clean minimal design and high quality photos posted on this blog, with the greatest of ease. I have so many pictures I already took for the website, now it is a matter of really sitting down to make it all happen.

At least I am keeping busy with my shirts. I have been shredding t shirts and studding, pinning, toughening them up. They already look so good. Can't wait to post!!!
